iDE Global:
International Development Enterprises, Playbook to Thrive

Rollout of a global Agile growth strategy, managing sprint teams and projects across 10 countries

iDE have been creating income and livelihood opportunities for poor, rural households for over 40 years. In 2020, the iDE leadership team and global network committed to implementing a new organisation-wide strategy, based on the Jim Collins’ Hedgehog and Flywheel concept, called ‘Playbook to Thrive’.

Metamorph were contracted to provide design and management support, as well as Agile coaching services, to facilitate delivery of the first year of ‘Playbook to Thrive’. We developed the methodology for year 1 rollout with the Executive Team, as well as developing sprint teams across all 10 country offices, which included support to two of iDE’s water and sanitation social enterprises. The aim was to deliver practical and achievable impact, demonstrate the efficacy of the ‘Playbook to Thrive’ model and build the skills needed to take forward the next cycle of Playbook. We also delivered an Agile training course tailored to iDE’s non-profit, international development project delivery context.

There’s a lot we could write about for this assignment! It was a wide ranging and made use of lots of approaches to problem solving, team and workflow management. Work included developing an Access to Finance Knowledge Management Platform in Bangladesh, improving the business mindset and collaborative culture in Cambodia, and developing strategic communications to increase awareness of iDE’s mission in Ghana.

Project Management support

Support for new client onboarding for a SaaS transition project

GivingForce support some of the largest companies in the world to safely, transparently and accurately donate both time and money worldwide.

GivingForce contracted Metamorph to work on an RFP to develop and apply best practice in community investment for an organisation supporting over 150 businesses worldwide. The issuing organisation wanted to transition from using its own community investment reporting software to a software-as-a-service solution.  We worked with GivingForce to draft the proposal, which they went on to win, and were subsequently asked to provide project management support to transition the client to the GivingForce Portal.

Sama Sama:
Agile ways of working and digital customer pilot

Water and sanitation social enterprise looking to bounce back from COVID 19 sales impact

Sama Sama was the first business to build, sell and install toilets in rural areas of Northern Ghana to improve access to sanitation for low-income communities. Metamorph supported the team to analyse and address the impact of COVID 19 on their face-to-face sales model, as well as running a pilot to increase the number of digital customers and reduce reliance on cash.

We trained a cross functional Sprint Team in Agile planning and task management, with parallel leadership coaching for senior staff.

Sama Sama moved from 100% cash payments before the pilot to 100% digital payments for new toilet sales afterwards. The work was noted at iDE’s global headquarters in America, and Metamorph were subsequently contracted by their Executive Team to work on the rollout of a new 5-year global strategy.

FutureX:
Purpose led growth strategy development

Re-energise a 4 day working week model and re-strategize for greater impact

FutureX and its founders Bruce and Zoi run a world-class community and education platform for purpose led entrepreneurs, accelerating impact, growth and sustainability.

They wanted to add more to their service offer and do more for their business community. They also wanted to re-energise and focus their team to improve the return on investment of adopting a 4-day working week.

We focussed on creating a new growth strategy to increase the number of entrepreneurs in the network, and position FutureX to provide professional services to existing members. Our approach was to develop and deliver the new strategy with the full team adopting a Scrum approach. In doing so, the team took ownership of the strategy, leading to increased engagement and energy; creating headspace for Bruce and Zoi to focus on building strategic partnerships.

It was great to hear from Zoi and Bruce that the work we did helped with their growth ambitions and gave the team a boost. And we were really pleased to accept a role as one of their FutureX Ambassadors - please go and check out their work!

UK Arts Charity:
Operating model design, business plan and growth strategy

Increasing membership, services offered and revenue generation

Metamorph are supporting the Director of an internationally recognised Theatre and Arts Organisation to develop and implement a new operating model and growth strategy.

The aim is to better serve their professional membership and increase visibility and demand for services within their industry. The work includes development of a business plan with supporting financial forecasting, and presentation coaching to facilitate buy-in and funding from senior stakeholders. The work provided the detail of how the business will operate in the future - something that is often missing from business plans - and identified important efficiency savings for the organisation.

The organisation is currently pitching its proposed growth strategy to their senior stakeholder groups. We look forward to sharing the outcomes of what has been a very interesting engagement, in an industry which we have not previously worked in.

Urban Symbiotics:
Agile based community engagement

Establish and chair Resident Advisory Boards to increase the impact of community engagement

Urban Symbiotics are a user-centric multi-disciplinary architecture, master planning and design practice. They are also changing the way community engagement is conducted, for the better.

Their challenge was winning new work - they kept winning new work! They needed time to step back and strategise their next phase of growth.

We ran a Growth Mapping session with their founders James and Steph, to define their 12-month targets and map a plan to achieve them. Following the session, we were able to support them bridge a delivery gap by directing the community engagement for one of their live projects - a public consultation for a large redevelopment in a London Borough - as well as chairing the consultation meetings.

As a result of the success of the consultation, the client asked Urban Symbiotics to support them to establish a Residents' Forum for Gascoigne, a Ward within the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham.

We supported Urban Symbiotics to design the engagement strategy, run the engagement process and now chair the Forum.

We are proud that the Forum has had their work shortlisted for a Festival of London Architecture award, and the client sponsor has been recognised with the New London Hidden Hero award.

The impact has led to the creation of a Barking wide Residents’ Advisory Board, which we are supporting Urban Symbiotics to deliver in a similar capacity.

Hydrologic:
Map and improve information flow for better team performance

Agile ways of working to address operational challenges

Hydrologic is a social enterprise that manufactures and sells ceramic water filters across Cambodia. Its CEO wanted to increase sales and customer engagement, and improve information flow in the company.

We established a Sprint Team to identify their three biggest operational challenges and then map the full process causing each challenge. We then worked with the team to plan and pilot changes to the processes to improve operational performance.

One of the challenges identified was the high turnover of staff. As a result of the pilot the CEO emailed us to note that no one had left Hydrologic in the months following the pilot, which she noted as “impressive”.

GivingForce:
4 + 1 working week implementation

Create CEO headspace, drive business development, improve team performance

GivingForce was founded to increase corporate charitable giving and volunteering. By all measures they were succeeding: providing an effective software and support platform to major financial and retain sector clients, leading to significant increases in staff volunteering and payroll giving.

But they had a problem.

They had become the victim of their own success and their founder and CEO had no time to focus on business development and other operational issues hampering growth. Ejaz wanted to delegate more to team leaders, freeing up time in the week to plan for growth and develop new products. He also wanted to fix some niggling issues that they never seemed to get round to.

Metamorph’s brief was to free up CEO time, identify and fix priority operational issues, and use the engagement design and delivery process to increase team autonomy and effectiveness – without disrupting the day-to-day running of the office!

Our approach was to develop a 4+1 working week model for a 10 week period: we analysed the team’s workload, compressed their normal 5 day week into 4, and made Friday a ‘change Friday’. The team were taught the basics of Agile and Scrum and led their own internal change management process, identifying and addressing efficiency gains and cost savings along the way. Ejaz got his Friday’s back and used the time to focus on BD and client management.

The rebalancing effort proved effective and GivingForce have gone on to realise their growth targets in pursuit of their mission.

“Working with Metamorph created an incredible buzz in the office. There is now a hunger from everyone to develop and grow both themselves and the business”

The assignment involved travel to Baghdad and Erbil to increase the programme’s visibility following inception; meeting with a wide range of Iraqi Government Agency stakeholders and counterparts at the UK Embassy in Baghdad and Erbil Consulate. The objective was to increase Iraq Government engagement with the Facility, and establish the programme’s project pipeline; both of which were achieved successfully.
